I used to work down the street from this place, and it's such a hidden gem. I used to eat here more than I'd probably care to admit.
It's run by the nicest Taiwanese family, and as far as I know, it's the only Taiwanese place in York or the surrounding area. It's in what was an old tea room, so it's got that cosy cafe feel.
The food here is really fresh and delicious, it's like having someone's Taiwanese mum cook for you. They also have basic Chinese fare which is equally good, just not as exciting. -

Good clean Chinese food in a wonderful historic building. The building is about seven hundred years old . Lunch is a deal at €7.50 each for soup and entree. The water closets were spectacular with paper towels. The roast duck is great and the special curry is nice. Friendly service also. Really a nice place to enjoy a historic part of York.

Pretty standard fare for Chinese, and I've had a lot coming from the US and Vancouver. But! Not standard pub fare finally.
The bean curd (tofu) and vegetables had lots of onions and only three tofu slices. Could use color too, red pepper, broccoli and larger carrots. The mixed veg chow mein my wife had looked decent but again, onions! They do use different mushrooms in the dishes which was good, and hers had a good amount of bok choy (Chinese leafy greens).
The service was very attentive and the space is cool. If I lived here we'd come again. -

We heard we might need a reservation for dinner in York, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. As we were checking Happy Valley's window menu, two guests came out & raved about the food, so we made a reservation.
The guests were right - the food & service was wonderful & the old historic building was very interesting. The staff were friendly & engaging asking about our origin & willing to share about their hometown of Beijing. -

Went here at the recommendation of a local college student carrying shopping bag from an Asian supermarket with that he was going home to cook--figure that would be a reliable source. Not.
I ordered tofu and veg soup and "crispy" duck with wrappers (what might be called Peking duck in the U.S.--I'm traveling from NY). Both acceptable, but very disappointing since I was really counting on deliciousness. Duck was served as a hash rather than in large chunks or slices, fresh tasting and with crispy skin intact. Pancakes tasteless, hoisin overly sweet, soup bland.
